MAKE 'EM LAUGH

LAUGH TILL YOUR SIDES SPLIT.

Paul MertonLaughter is many things to many people. What makes one person laugh can leave another stony faced. Still laughter is infectious and, if you are watching a comedian, who is making your companions roar with laughter, it will be hard for you not to join in. I suppose over the years many learned individuals will have tried to analyze comedy and laughter but I doubt that many will have truly sussed it out. I think it is much better to go with the flow, let your hair down, and laugh till you are fit to burst.

Nicholas Lyndhuurst and David JasonThis zone pays homage to those wonderful human beings who can make us laugh and forget life's worries, even if only for a short time. God bless 'em all and long may they reign. New age comedy, slapstick, farce, mother-in-law jokes and more as long as it is amusing.

 Bill CosbyBilly ConnollyLaurel and Hardy

Comedy can come in the form of jokes, theatre, television, cartoons, comedy quiz shows, situation comedies, a book, films, friends and more. Here are some quotes from some famous funny people, and some funny quotes from serious people, down the years:-

"Marry me and I'll never look at another horse!"  Groucho Marks

"He said 'I'm going to chop off the bottom of one of your trouser legs and put it in a library. I thought, "That's a turn-up for the books."  Tommy Cooper

"My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic."  Spike Milligan

"At my age flowers scare me."George Burns

"If life were fair, Dan Quayle would be making a living asking Do you want fries with that?" John Cleese

"Never trust a man who, when left alone in a room with a tea cozy, doesn't try it on" Billy Connolly

"I wanna live 'til I die, no more, no less."  Eddie Izard

"Work is the curse of the drinking classes." Oscar Wilde

"There are worse things in life than death. Have you ever spent an evening with an insurance salesman?"  Woody Allen

"There we were in the middle of a sexual revolution wearing clothes that guaranteed we wouldn't get laid!"  Dennis Leary

At least one of the above must surely have raised a giggle ?

Basics of this Zone

LIFE OF BRIANEveryone needs to laugh and the more the merrier.

For all too many people life can be hard and laughter all too rare.

Grab hold of the funny side of life whenever and wherever you can.

Remember, as Eric Idle sings in The Life of Brian, -Always look on the bright side of life.

Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best...

And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...

If life seems jolly rotten
There's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps
Don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing.

And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...

For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.

So always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath

Life's a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true.
You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.

And always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the right side of life...
(Come on guys, cheer up!)
Always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the bright side of life...
(Worse things happen at sea, you know.)
Always look on the bright side of life...
(I mean - what have you got to lose?)
(You know, you come from nothing - you're going back to nothing.
What have you lost? Nothing!)

Always look on the right side of life...

COMEDY

As a child I remember going to the cinema with my Dad and Brother to watch the Kings of Comedy. As they both howled with laughter at the sight of the Three Stooges rowing a boat, going in circles, whilst one arm became huge with muscles I could only watch them both puzzled. To me the scene was not in the least bit funny and their tears of laughter were decidedly odd. At home Dad would be in tears if an old Laurel and Hardy film came on and I, again, would just not get it.

With age I came to appreciate this old humour and have since cried with laughter and felt that I could not breathe also. I suppose this shows that our sense of humour changes and grows with us. Similarly I have heard British people say that they cannot appreciate American comedy and vice versa. However i think that this difference has minimised as the world shrinks as after all we all travel far more frequently these days and often much further afield.

Top Comedians

  • Comedy production team Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone are best known for bringing the instant classics "D*ck in a Box," "Lazy Sunday" and "Jizz in My Pants" to the general public through digital shorts aired on Saturday Night Live since 2005. The troupe also runs a website that features its self-made content and has had two pilots (one for Fox and one for MTV) rejected due to the FCC-challenging nature of their comedy. An album featuring their particularly saucy parodies of everything from C+C Music Factory to the Dirty South, Incredibad, appeared in 2009. - MMCGUIRK
